Description and objective: This one day workshop for line managers and supervisors looks at the key concepts of counselling in the workplace, including boundaries and confidentiality, effective listening skills and the counselling environment. Syndicate exercises are used to provide an opportunity to practise active listening skills for the support of staff, particularly during times of stress and change.

• The experience of listening – pairs exercises and feedback
• Barriers to effective listening
• Building trust/key counsellor qualities
• The Three Stage Model (Egan/Carkhuff)
• Skills development and practice
• Problem-solving model
• When to refer/sources of referral
• Avoiding burnout – know your own support systems
• Relaxation and visualisation
• Action planning and force field analysis
